PPM Color Calibration Primer

I’ve spent a couple hours yesterday trying out the app. While it’s definitely useful and helps improve the image a lot, it’s also really a pain to use and tricky even if you’re well experienced in color calibration. The problem is that while the test images offer a good and wide selection, most of them are heavily edited and don’t have natural colors in the first place. So since the app can’t be shown as a layover on a standard screen or video of the projector, it takes lots and lots of time and going back and forth and back and forth through all the images to set it up in a way that will make the regular video image look similar.

Also, it might be my unit, but the unit’s internal preset setting has a big problem with prioritizing green way too much. This applies to all presets and is noticeable even when the green led is turned down as much as possible. Green will always be way too saturated and overexposed. In one test yesterday, I basically turned off green and turned down the saturation, and while all other colors were much reduced and flat, green was still way too oversaturated and hit you in the eye.

In any case, I’ve found that for my standard white painted wall (and my unit), the following settings will result in an at least close to natural look for video playback, without the whites visibly going into a greenish-yellowish tint (all public settings unchanged at the 50 % mark):

Preset 14
Red 780
Green 110
Blue 330
